Pompei was burried by ash. Everything below the ash was preserved.

These blocks were pedestrian crossings. The gaps are for cart wheels. You can even see ruts in the road.

Ruts formed by years of cart traffic when Pompei was a busy sea port.

This clay jar is called an amphora

Hundreds of amphorae have been found. They held wine, oil, water and just about anything.

This picture was a sign advertising porters or laborers. The roman lettering is modern.

Two thousand years ago they had lead pipes and real taps!
